Winter 2009 classes for Children & Teens
MondaysYoung At Art (ages 3-5)Instructor: Kate Krentz Young artists will experiment with paints, paper, markers, clay and more. A new project each week will give students time to explore all the possibilities of creating art. $90 members, $115 non-members Pint-Sized Picassos (ages 4-6)Instructor: Joanna Abel Unleash your inner Picasso! Work with colors, shapes, lines and all the tools Picasso used to create his masterpieces. Make wacky portraits, crazy sculptures and more. $110 members, $135 non-members The Art of Mexico (ages 6-9)Instructor: Barbara Minges Head south of the border to learn about the rich culture of our neighbor, Mexico. Create festive artwork inspired by the people and places you visit along the way. Learn about famous Mexican artists like Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera as we paint, draw, sculpt and more. $110 members, $135 non-members TuesdaysArt in the Family (ages 2-3 w/adult)Instructor: Sara Appleby Experience the joy of spending time with your favorite young person. Have fun working together transforming paint, clay, glitter, glue and more into unique works of art to display or give away. A new activity or theme will be introduced each week. Each child must be accompanied by one adult. $80 members, $105 non-members Winter Stories (ages 4-6)Instructor: Lacey Wolcott Look around and see all the beautiful colors that winter provides: red berries and cardinals, pale blue skies, green pine trees and purple shadows. Enjoy stories of the season and then create your own book of winter stories. $110 members, $135 non-members Introduction to Drawing (ages 6-9)Instructor: Lindsay Woge Use a variety of drawing materials including charcoal, graphite, colored pencil & marker while learning the fundamental techniques of drawing. Learn to use line, shading, perspective, negative space and texture to draw landscapes, still life and portraits or simply to capture your imagination on paper. Visit the PCA galleries to view the paintings of Pat Bellan-Gillen’s Zoologic exhibition. $110 members, $135 non-members Digital Photo for Teens (ages 14-17)Instructor: Betsy van den Blink This class will familiarize students with the unique functions of their digital still cameras and provide an introduction to Adobe Photoshop software. Digital and traditional photography will be compared and the class assignments will allow students to develop and improve their aesthetic and technical skills through practice and in-class discussions. Students should bring their own cameras to class or may choose to borrow a camera from the lab. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a minimum of two final digital prints and a CD of their portfolio of work from the class. Students may choose to borrow equipment outside of class for an access fee of $25. $165 members, $190 non-members. Max enrollment: 5 B&W Photography for Teens (ages 14-17)Instructor: Sally Bozutto This black and white photography course is for students who want to learn more about traditional photography using film and manual 35mm cameras. Film types, exposure, lenses, movement, composition and depth of field will be covered, along with processing black and white negatives and printing in the darkroom. Bring your own camera to class, black and white chemistry is provided, but students provide their own film and paper, available for purchase from the instructor. $150 members, $175 non-members. Max enrollment 10 WednesdaysAndy's Factory (ages 6-9)Instructor: Joanna Abel Join the assembly line in creating some amazing Pop Art masterpieces. Learn about what makes art "pop" and how Andy Warhol used the help of his friends to create amazing artwork from images in popular culture. Drawing, painting, sculpture and printing will be explored. $110 members, $135 non-members Jewelrymaking (ages 9-14)Instructor: Adina DeRoy Stouffer Learn the art of wire wrapping using sterling silver wire, copper wire, semi-precious stones, crystals and assorted beads. Explore the different properties of silver, copper, crystals and semi-precious stones. Craft rings, earrings, bracelets, anklets, hair adornments and much more! $125 members, $150 non-members ThursdaysYoung Masters (ages 6-9)instructor: Kate Krentz Students will view and discuss the great paintings and sculptures throughout history, using the works as inspiration for creating unique artworks with a wide variety of art materials. A special emphasis will be placed on female artists throughout history. Visit the PCA galleries to view the paintings of Pat Bellan-Gillen’s Zoologic exhibition. This is a great class for students who love to draw and are ready to take the next step. $110 members, $135 non-members Found Art Paintings (ages 9-14)instructor: Jillian Nintze Take painting to the next level! Use the artwork of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg as inspiration as you incorporate sculptural elements into your paintings. Use everyday objects that you find as part of your very own 3-D paintings. (ages 4-6)instructor: Jane Irwin Welcome in the winter with art as our guide. Snowflakes, icicles and snowmen will keep us company as we explore the beauty of winter through painting, drawing, sculpture and more. $110 members, $135 non-members Multi-Media Medley (ages 6-9)instructor: Robin Harsh Discover your creativity while developing fundamental art skills. Explore painting, drawing, sculpture and more in this exciting multi-media class. A wonderful opportunity to sample a variety of the arts! $110 members, $135 non-members Drawing Studio (ages 10-15)instructor: Rikki Walsh Join in this new professional studio experience for young artists. Learn the basics of drawing and painting through exercises that focus on the still life, portrait, and wildlife subjects. Use a variety of materials including pencil, ink, charcoal and paint to produce several finished projects. $195 members, $220 non-members Ceramics Intensive (ages 12-16)instructor: Kristin DeGiovanni Take your ceramics skills to the next level. Learn more advanced techniques for throwing on the wheel, using stoneware clay and high fire glazes. All pieces will be fired in our high fire gas kiln. $220 members, $245 non-members Animation for Kids (ages 5-7)instructor: Filmmakers at the Center staff The activities in this course will nurture the creative spirit of young children by allowing them to experiment with the art form of animation. Focusing on the manner in which younger children exhibit curiosity regarding the moving image, they will be guided through a step-by-step process leading to a final animation project burned onto a DVD. All children will work with paper materials, digital cameras and computers, while being encouraged to let their young minds explore the imaginative possibilities of animation. $80 members. $105 non-members. Max enrollment: 5 Clay Animation (ages 8-12)instructor: Filmmakers at the Center staff Learn to design and create your own movie using the popular technique of claymation. Participants will take on a creative roll to complete a short animated movie with a soundtrack. After completion of the class, students will receive a copy of the animated projects with additional "making–of" footage. $85 members, $110 non-members. Max enrollment: 5 Pinhole Photography (ages 14-17)instructor: Brian Krummel The captivating world of pinhole photography will be covered in this fun, exploratory class. Participants will be guided through constructing their own pinhole camera out of commonly found materials, taking pictures and developing their unique photographs in the darkroom. Tuition includes five 8x10 prints, with more paper available for purchase. $80 members $105 non-members (fee includes chemicals). Max enrollment: 6 Claymaking (ages 6-9)instructor: Jane Irwin Get your hands muddy! Working with clay has limitless possibilities. Make pots, tiles & small sculptures while learning a variety of handbuilding methods including pinch, coil and slab construction. Use colorful glazes & underglazes to decorate your work. $115 members, $140 non-members Clay for Two (ages 5-8 w/adult)instructor: Robin Harsh Collaborate on projects or work independently side-by-side to create pots, tiles and small sculptures while learning handbuilding methods like pinch, coil and slab construction. Use glazes, underglazes or paints to finish your pieces. Fee is for one child and one adult. $150 members, $175 non-members Drawing and Painting Studio (ages 6-9)instructor: Rikki Walsh Experience life as a studio artist in this introduction to drawing and painting techniques. Learn the basics of drawing and painting through exercises that focus on the still life, portrait, and wildlife subjects. Use a variety of materials including pencil, ink, charcoal and paint to produce several finished projects. $140 members, $165 non-members Cartooning (ages 9-14)instructor: Thad Dachille Move over Mickey Mouse, and start creating your own cartoon paintings! Topics will include painting a cut out animal, creating a cartoon strip and a class cartoon collage project. We will cultivate interest in creating expressionistic imagery, painting techniques, and yes of course, silly faces. $140 members, $165 non-members Wheelthrown Ceramics (ages 9-14)instructor: Kristin DeGiovanni Beginners learn to create pots, bowls, mugs and more in this fun introduction to making pottery on the wheel. Preparing the clay, using clay tools, centering, throwing cylinders and bowls, as well as glazing and decorating techniques covered. Firing processes and clay properties also discussed. Advanced students may complete one piece that will be high fired using our high fire glazes. $150 members, $175 non-members 3D Computer Animation (ages 14-17)instructor: Andrew Pavlick This course will introduce students to Blender, a popular and powerful open source software application used for 3D animation in movies and videogames. Students will learn creative approaches to making their own 3D objects while developing a working knowledge of the principles of animated movement. Class activities will include exercises, demonstrations and examples designed to give students a solid foundation in this captivating field. $160 members, $185 non-members. Max enrollment: 5 Paper Bead Basics (ages 9 thru adult)instructor: Celeta Hickman In collaboration with the Society of Yoruba Bead Artists (exhibiting at the Center beginning February 8). Discover basic paper bead making using recycled magazines and newspaper. Participants will learn basic bead shapes and embellish with glass/plastic beads, found objects, acrylic paints and glitter. Projects will range from simple anklets, bracelets and necklaces. Dress casually and come prepared to play! Bring a bag lunch. Children should be accompanied by adult. $50 members, $75 non-members |
