Secrets of Screen ActingAnnie Seamans Media Arts Lab Learn the tricks of the trade for acting in movies and television We’ve been watching film and television actors all our lives—- but what makes for a successful screen performance? How does it differ from acting on the stage? In this class, the instructor will utilize video to demonstrate and instruct acting-for-the-camera techniques to young actors Additionally, students will examine great film performances to discover the secrets of their success Students will perform on camera and critique their performance in class, enabling them to learn the basics of professional film and television craft One class will focus on audition technique, to prepare young actors to try out for the many film and television productions that shoot in Pittsburgh every year Each student will receive a DVD of their work that can be used as an introduction to casting directors. NCECA WORKSHOPSZoomorphic VolumesInstructor: Bernadette Curran Curran will share her playful approach to clay by transforming simple pottery shapes in zoomorphic forms and their humble abodes. From quick gesture
drawings on paper to more imposing alterations of pots thrown fresh off the wheel, the spontaneity will allow for both functional and sculptural
solutions. Emphasis will be on techniques such as cutting and folding, bottomless cylinders, and pushing clay from the inside out. Historical and
contemporary examples of animal pots will be referenced in slide lectures and group discussions. Curran will also discuss how her love for drawing
into the clay is enhanced by slip, terra-sig, and the glazed surface. Painting With Smoke – Three VisionsInstructors: Kate and Will Jacobson, David Roberts, Eduardo Lazo The workshop explores several different approaches to carbon-stenciled raku. Kate and Will Jacobson, studio potters from Hawaii, create a harmonious
substance of form, line and color. Their technique, Naked Raku, exposes the unadorned, earthly beauty of clay and they will share stories and processes
derived from their thirty-year collaboration. Hand-Made Brushes and Painting on ClayInstructor: Glenn Grishkoff Grishkoff will lead this workshop on the craft of hand-made brushes. He will discuss brush-making techniques from Japan, the West and techniques
developed during the exploration of the hand made brush both as a work of art and a functional tool. Deer, horse, moose and cat hair will be used to
create individual brushes in bamboo. On day two, the brushes will be used to paint on a variety of clay surfaces. Wheel throwing and hand building
demonstrations will also demonstrate the functional uses of these unique tools. |
