instructor biosJoanna Abel received her BA in Art from LaRoche College. Joanna has been involved with the PCA for the past two years in various capacities. She teaches a variety of age groups and works in a variety of different media. Joanna is also an accomplished belly dancer performing and teaching in the Pittsburgh area. Jamie Adams Jamie Adams' portraits have been commissioned and collected all across the country, and from as far away as Vienna, Austria. Notable public commissions include Pennsylvania Governor Robert P. Casey, former University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Wesley Posvar, Carnegie Mellon’s Dr. Edward R. Schatz, the late Cardinal John J. Wright, Pennsylvania House Speaker Matthew Ryan, and many other Speakers and Senate leaders. Jamie was also commissioned by the State to complete four paintings of 18th Century House Speakers, including Benjamin Franklin. Jamie previously taught at Temple University, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, PCA and Carnegie Mellon University. Jamie currently teaches drawing and anatomy at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Core Program. He has also recently lectured in Brussels, Belgium, on the palettes and color strategies of the European Schools. Jamie had 2006/2007 solo exhibits in New York City at the Jack the Pelican Present Gallery and the Philip Slein Gallery in St. Louis, MO. Jamie has invitational group exhibits forthcoming this summer at the Daum Contemporary Musuem in Kansas City, MO and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Delores Tucker, former Pennsylvania Secretary of State/The PA Secretary of State Office, and Gerald Early, the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Denise has taught printmaking, papermaking, casting, welding and design at the Rochester Institute of Technology and in schools. She was the lead archivist for the Bausch and Lomb Optics Center in Rochester, NY, and a nominee for the International Sculpture Center’s Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture in 2006. Mauren Antkowski Concentrates mainly in photography, drawing and small sculpture. Her work is not media-specific but has a connecting theme that compares true location with false existence and representation. Exhibits locally. BFA, Carnegie Mellon University. Laurie Arnold has a deep interest and commitment to the positive effects of self-expression though writing. She began offering writing groups to cancer patients and their families and experienced how storytelling and writing enhanced connection and integration of difficult feelings. Since then, she’s taught writing in libraries, hospitals, community education centers, art galleries, nature centers, schools and shelters. All parts of the writing process are emphasized, from seeking out subjects, to what stops us from writing. The chance to express oneself and feel heard through the empowering act of creativity can be life changing. She’s found participants’ experiences most importantly bring new hope, and foster ability to meet life’s challenges. Certified Poetry Facilitator, M.Ed, RN, Writer. Sara Applebyis a mixed media artist and teacher working in the children’s program at the PCA. She received her BA in Studio Arts and BA in History of Art and Architecture from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to PCA, Sara has also worked with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and Child Watch of Pittsburgh.. Pat Barefoot is a member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Society of Artists. Exhibits locally in drawing and painting. Teaches at Carnegie Mellon University. BFA, Drawing and Painting, Carnegie Mellon University; BS, Secondary Education, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Vincent Beatty is a decorative artist and muralist working along the East Coast for leading designers and galleries. A competitive Olympic sport fencer and sword historian, he serves as sword master for the Pittsburgh Opera and the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Florida. Jennifer Bechak is a sculptor who has been an adjunct Professor at several colleges and universities throughout PA for the past 7 years. Jennifer studied at the University of Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts, earned her BFA from Edinboro University of PA and MA and MFA from Indiana University of PA. She thoroughly enjoys teaching and interacting with students, and assisting students to be successful in their own endeavors. Jennifer is on the Advisory Board for the on-line based group, Articulate: Pittsburgh Creative Network. She’s also part of Dreaming Ant, an independent dvd shop, and curator for Crazy Mocha, located in Bloomfield. Nancy Bishop is a former production weaver, currently working full time as a graphic artist. She is a member and former president of the Weaver’s Guild of Pittsburgh, a PCA resident guild. In addition, Bishop has worked for five years as a mentor artist for Woodland Hills High School’s Gifted Program. BA, Art History, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Marlene Boyle is a commercial calligrapher and graphic artist. She has taught at Sweetwater Center for the Arts and at the Chautauqua Institution. Marlene is a member of the Calligraphic Guild of Pittsburgh. BA, Art History, University of Pittsburgh. Tina Brewer has developed a national reputation as a creator of story quilts. Ms. Brewer's work has been widely exhibited locally and nationally. She received first place award with one of her story quilts in the Art of the State Exhibition in Harrisburg. Member of Fiber Arts Guild, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and Women of Vision. Morton Brown, originally from Arkansas, is currently a public artist and an art consultant for the City of Pittsburgh Department of Parks and Recreation. His involvement with public art began while he was in college. He painted murals in private homes, for businesses, churches and on public buildings, and involved with the Smithsonian Institution’s Save Outdoor Sculpture! program. Morton also worked as a mural artist with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program before moving to Pittsburgh in 2001. From 2003 to 2007, Morton helped create and administrate the Sprout Public Art Program, a nonprofit organization that utilizes local artists to paint community murals throughout the region. Valda Cox is a professional potter who has been teaching at PCA for more than 20 years. Ms. Cox exhibits widely throughout region and country. BA, Syracuse University. Arlene Crissman has been working as custom gold and silver jewelry maker since 1976. Ms. Crissman was awarded the Three Rivers Arts Festival’s Best of Show in 1984 and 1986. Thad Dachillegraduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s in Studio Art. Thad is a mixed media painter working in the children’s program. He was previously an artist instructor at the Cambria County Community Arts Center. Patrick Daugherty is a full-time professional artist, freelancing in commercial art and specialized in portrait painting. He has taught at PCA for more than 20 years. Patrick is the Director of the Frank L. Melega Art Museum, in Brownsville, Pa. He currently teaches at PSU Eberly Campus, Fayette County, Touchstone Center for Crafts and the West Moreland County Community College. MFA, University of Wisconsin. Ryan Day is a printmaker and photographer and recently arrived in Pittsburgh from Wisconsin, where he completed his MFA in Printmaking. His artwork is primarily inspired by his fascination with technology in relationship with humanity. In addition to his artistic work, he has also worked as a photojournalist and graphic designer in the US and several countries in Africa. Melissa Davenport is a self-taught artist who exhibits regionally and nationally. She currently works as the jewelry studio manager at Touchston Center for Crafts. She is a member of the Pittsburgh Metals Society and the Silversmiths of North America Guild. Adina DeRoy-Stouffer is a Squirrel Hill native and graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. She has continued the family tradition in the jewelry industry, designing and selling jewelry for the past ten years. Ms. DeRoy-Stouffer studied jewelry design in Italy. She sells her jewelry internationally through the Internet. Ron Donoughe works full-time as a painter, and has participated in several group and one-man shows. His paintings are included in many corporate and private collections, as well as exhibited at The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. BS, Art Education, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Damian Dressickis a Pushcart nominee and winner of the 2007 Harriette Arnow Award for short fiction. Damian Dressick’s work has appeared appear in more than twenty-five literary journals, including failbetter.com, New Delta Review, Alimentum, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Caketrain and Vestal Review. Founding curator of Pittsburgh's UPWords Reading Series, Damian has written extensively about Pennsylvania’s coal country, including a historical novel and “Home Brew,” a short story anthologized in Main Street Rag’s Anthology of Small Town American Life. He teaches creative writing and literature at Robert Morris University and serves on the advisory board for the nationally-distributed journal Epiphany. Ekunfeo is a 2006/2008 recipient of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts’ Master/Apprentice Fellowship in Traditional Yoruba Beadwork (as Master), has studied anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh and percussion at The Olatunji Center for African Culture in New York. BA, English Literature, Carlow College. T. J. Fejka is a metalsmithing artist with roots in the gunsmithing trade. He has been working primarily as an artist for the past 15 years. He has been teaching at the Center for over 50 years. His jewelry, which he signs “Frappe,” has been exhibited and recognized nationally. Teri Geeverhas studied with many nationally recognized national artists including Linda Fruhwald, Frank Webb and Skip Lawrence. In her work, she enjoys playing with shapes, colors and values that express her thoughts and feelings. She has won numerous awards, including 2nd Place at the Spirit of America Show NHAC 2006. Her work appears in many private collections. Member of Sumi-e Society of America, International Society of Experimental Artists, and the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society. Robin Harsh was the PCA Summer Art Camp Manager in 1998 and 1999. She has been teaching multimedia elementary Art for over 7 years. Certified and taught elementary Art in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. BS, Art Education K-12, Art History minor, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Celeta Hickman is a bead artist, dancer, costumer, and student of Africana Studies ,West African Art of Leadership, Functional Art and Masquerade. Hickman has created and designed children’s costumes for Nego Gato Children’s Dance Ensemble, and teaches children and adults throughout the Pittsburgh area in the nuances of African art and dance as artist-in-resident for the Society of Yoruba Bead Artists Artist in Residency Program. Hickman has also worked extensively as cataloger for the Charles “Teenie” Harris Archive at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art. Robert Huckestein is a professional award-winning artist, specializing in oil painting, watercolor, pencil, and pen-and-ink drawing of the people and places of Pittsburgh done in a realistic style. He has exhibited and won awards at many regional and national galleries including the Center. His work is included in many private collections and in the permanent collection of the Pennsylvania State Museum. Richard Hurstis a professional photographer represented in the permanent collections of The Corcoran, Smithsonian, Carnegie Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New York Public Library, and Dallas Museum of Art. Jane Irwin has been involved in various aspects of the Center school for over four years, working in both the office and teaching in the studios. After graduating from Carlow University in 2006 with a BA in Art Education, she has been working with multiple age groups. Within her classes, Jane strives to develop each student’s skills and creativity on an individual basis. She is currently a substitute teacher in the South Hills area. Robert Isenberg is an award-winning journalist, playwright, actor and comedian (no awards for the comedy -- yet). He is co-author of The Pittsburgh Monologue Project and writes about travel and TV for MSN.com. A McSweeney's alum, also contributes regularly to City Paper and Pop City and heads a theatre column for Pittsburgh Magazine. He has traveled to 22 countries around the globe. Brandon Jennings is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Brandon has twelve years experience in graphic design, illustration, and comic book art. Brandon is currently teaching graphic design full time at Pittsburgh Technical Institute and exhibits his paintings at various galleries. Michael Johnsen is a co-founder of the influential Orgone Cinema. He has been a consistent advocate for sincere and truly independent media culture since the late ’80s. He has shown films and performed locally and internationally in backyards and museums. His current work concerns the design of electronic audio devices for live performance. Sandy Kephart is a professional fiber artist who exhibits regionally and has won numerous awards. She has taught for over 20 years and brings enthusiasm and a “break the rules” approach to the classroom. She is a member of the East Suburban Artists League, South Arts & the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh. Joe King has been a professional tree carver for over 17 years and travels the country sculpting on-site tree stumps. Joe has an extensive background in all types of woodworking and produces many different styles of custom commission work from the studio, and unique installations. Paula Garrick Klein is a professional artist who exhibits paintings in oil, acrylic and pastels and original inaglio and monotype prints locally and regionally. She is known for her still life and portrait paintings as well as her etchings and monotypes that have autobiographical references. Paula has taught a variety of painting and drawing classes to both adults and high school students at PCA and through other educational venues. She is a member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Print Group and Pittsburgh Society of Artists. She has an MAT in Art Education and a BFA in Painting, both from Rhode Island School of Design. Kate Krentz is a full-time art teacher at Whitehall Elementary School in the South Hills. She previously taught high school art in West Virginia and has been an instructor in the children’s program for the past three years. BS in Education from Ohio University. Tom Ladosa is professional ceramic artist who has shown his work in New Orleans and locally at Gallerie Chiz. He has taught ceramics and sculpture for 32 years at universities in Louisiana. BA, University of Wisconsin. MFA, Southern Illinois University. Tina lazzarine is an Erie artist working primarily with metals and enamels. Matt Marino studied for two years at Carnegie Mellon and later graduated with a BFA in sculpture from the Cleveland Institute of Art. He is inspired by the poetry in art and has worked in a variety of mediums. Matt loves to find the poetic harmony and dissonance in the various things he does and finds nature infinitely inspiring. Deb Meteney has been weaving for over 30 years and has taught at Touchstone Center for Crafts and as an adjunct professor at Seton Hill University. She specializes in warp painted handwoven clothing, and is currently focusing on current methods of interest like woven shibori, and woven differential shrinking/felting. Her clothing has been exhibited locally and shown at Convergence juried fashion shows and published in Handwoven Magazine and the Fiberarts Design Book Series. Barbara Minges has had extensive experience teaching art to elementary age children in Boston, LA and Pittsburgh. She was on PCA staff as an Artist Educator from 2002-4 working in community programs. For the past 5 years Barbara has been teaching at Dilworth Traditional Academy for the Arts and Humanities implementing an arts infusion program for grades 2-5. BFA, California Institute of the Arts. Gordon Nelson is an independent filmmaker whose films and videos have screened locally, regionally and as far away as New Zealand. He is currently the Senior Instructor at Filmmakers at the Center and holds an Adjunct Assistant Professor position at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. He is also the former Program Coordinator for the Department of Film and Video at the Carnegie Museum of Art. B.F.A., Film, Edinboro University. Jillian Nintze is a mixed media artist and teacher working in the children’s program at the PCA. Jillian worked as the Executive Director of the Meadville Children’s Center and as an artist educator in various capacities before joining the PCA. relief, and silkscreen. He is a member of Pittsburgh Print Group. Exhibits
regionally. BFA, Carnegie Mellon University. Adriane Pacella owns her own shop and has been making homemade soap, lotions and body butters for 11 years. She has nine years teaching experience. BS, Indiana University of PA. Andrew Pavlick is a regional digital artist and is the founder of the In-Motion Project, which provides workshops, classes, and learning material in the digital arts. His work focuses both on creating static imagery and time based pieces on computers. His work has exhibited at The Butler Institute of American Art where he showed as a regional digital photographer. BFA, Digital Arts, Bowling Green University. Donna Penoyer is a Pittsburgh artist specializing in fine silver jewelry and sculptural whistles, known as ArtWhistles, made from Precious Metal Clay. She is certified through both Rio Grande and the PMC Connection and is a member of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Pittsburgh. She has explored many media, including fabric surface design, polymer clay, found objects, wire work, bead weaving, glass, resin, and enameling, gravitating more and more toward wearable art. Penoyer has a degree in literature and creative writing, as well as extensive training in performance, and has been a professional stiltwalker for several years, entertaining at corporate events and festivals. Heather Joy Puskarich is a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Film Studies and a concentration in Photography. Since discovering the Pittsburgh Glass Center and working under artists such as Jeffrey Phelps and Susan Taylor Glasgow, she has begun specializing in photographic imagery in kiln formed glass. Currently a staff member at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, Heather Joy continues to experiment in flat glass and imagery as her primary focus. Susan Radford was born in London, England at the time of the 2nd World War, when clothing was scarce and rationed. She learned quickly to make the necessities of life herself. Knitting and design has always fascinated her. Susan also makes jewelry. Dafna Rehavia Hanauer is an art therapist with 13 years of experience working in a variety of psychiatric, educational and private settings in Israel and US. She has an MA in Expressive Art Therapy from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia and is currently working on her Phd at Derby University in the UK. Ms. Rehavia is also an exhibiting artist who has shown in Israel and the US. Her art work is characterized by the use of painting and assemblage to explore personally significant questions and issues. Myrna Rosen is an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University. In addition, she has been on the faculty of six International Lettering Arts conferences, and has taught at the Center for the last 25 years. She is a founding member of the Calligraphy Guild of Pittsburgh, and exhibits work nationally and internationally. Her latest major project was the restoration of the marble benefactor tables flanking the exit doorway from the Duquesne University Chapel with more than 200 names lettered with enamel and brush. Brooke Rothshank is an independent artist working from her home studio in Pittsburgh. She has shown her miniature paintings at shows across the country, including New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. She has been working in miniature for 5 years. Joseph T. Sendek has a wide range of teaching experience at universities and regional art centers. Exhibits nationally. Member of American Ceramics Society. MFA, Arizona State University; MA, University of Northern Colorado; BA, California State University. Jennie Kay Snyder has exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally. She has won awards in shows through Southern California and Oregon. Jennie has been represented by galleries in New York, Los Angles, Portland, Pittsburgh and beyond. Her work is included in several private and corporate collections in the United States and Europe. She also paints murals. BFA, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Betsy van den Blinkis a 2007 graduate of George Mason University with a BA in Art & Visual Technology. She worked as a photo intern for the Smithsonian National Postal museum, and her images are published on their website, “Arago.” She also worked as an intern for the photo editor of the Star-Gazette newspaper (Elmira, NY), and had several images published. She currently works as the PCA Registrar. Robert Villamanga works in assemblage, collage, and mixed media and has been exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Andy Warhol Museum, ARC Gallery (Chicago), Penn State’s Robeson Gallery, Pittsburgh Center of the Arts, Erie Museum of Art, Huntington Museum of Art, and the West Virginia Cultural Center. His work is in the West Virginia museum Permanent Collection and can be seen at Gallery on 43rd Street in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh, and the Society for Contemporary Craft, in Pittsburgh's Strip District. Nic Vincent is a mixed media artist working primarily with industrial materials and found objects. Nic has been represented by galleries in both NYC and Pittsburgh. Lindsay Woge is a museum educator and artist, dividing her time between Chicago and Pittsburgh, where she has taught at PCA for the past six years. In addition to exhibiting mixed-media works nationally, Lindsay focuses on instructing adults and children in drawing, painting, and mixed-media; developing museum curriculum; and curating exhibits. Exhibits and teaches regionally and nationally. MA, Ceramic At, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Kathleen Zimbicki is a professional artist who has been teaching at PCA since 1972. She had the honor of being the only living Pittsburgh watercolorist exhibited in a 100-year survey of American Master Watercolor Painters. Most recently, Ms. Zimbicki is featured in a solo exhibition at the PCA, entitled Zimbicki Roars. Ms. Zimbicki exhibits nationally and internationally. |
