Careers in Filmmaking

Graduates from the program may wish to seek employment at one of Pittsburgh’s local production companies, or they may choose to work as freelancers.  The Pittsburgh Film Office provides job listings for filmmakers and crewmembers and has assisted more than 105 feature films and television productions in southwestern PA, generating an economic impact of more than $600 million in the region.  In recent years, the Pittsburgh area has continued to serve as a location for major films.

Graduates from the program may also opt to launch their own projects. To that end, students who earn The Filmmaking Intensive diploma will be offered a free, one year membership to Pittsburgh Filmmakers following graduation.  Membership provides support for production needs by providing 24-hour access to equipment and the facilities.  Graduates may also continue to take a limited number of courses at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, over a prescribed time, to further enhance their technical skills and knowledge.  In some instances, graduates may need to consider relocation to obtain employment in the field.

Potential job opportunities for graduates of The Filmmaking Intensive can be divided into two categories, based on the scale of the media production involved.  Small-scale productions, such as non-broadcast videos, certain web content, local TV commercials, event videography and promotional videos offer opportunities for jobs with significant creative and technical responsibility.  Large-scale productions, such as feature films, television series, and nationally broadcast TV commercials offer subordinate positions that provide entry into the industry’s many positions.

Note that many of these positions exist as project-to-project freelance jobs, rather than as permanent, salaried positions.
