Artist of the Year, perhaps the oldest and most revered tradition at the Center, has honored an outstanding artist since 1949. After a successful retrospective of all previous honorees in 2001, PCA rededicated itself to making this “old” tradition again an important annual event to honor an outstanding regional artist. That year, for the first time, an Emerging Artist of the Year was also presented. The mix of work by both an established artist and an emerging artist recognizes the dynamic role of artists in PCA’s past, present, and future.
This exhibit honors artists in their later years and hopes to bring awareness to the region's history and wealth of outstanding artists. The selection committee was looking for artists - 60 and older - who have had a noticeable career of artistic attainment, with a measurable impact on Southwestern Pennsylvania, and are still creating. These ten new honorees join 50 outstanding visual artists honored in five previous exhibitions. The last exhibition was held in 2005 at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.
The 2013 honorees:
Being a transitional year for the Guilds at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, members of the Guilds will be given an opportunity to exhibit their current work under one umbrella of an all Guild exhibition titled “The New Collective.” PCA Guild Exhibition Committee invites PCA- Affiliated -Guild artists to exhibit their current work in this exhibition. The Guild Exhibition Committee is reorganizing the approach to Guild exhibitions to be in alignment with current times and to be driven by the Guilds; no longer using themes as a basis for exhibitions.
