Artist of the Year
Akiko Kotani will have an artist talk on Wednesday Oct 2, from 6:00-8:00pm. Gallery Admission will be free as part RADical Days 2013.
PCA's Artist of the Year is recognized as a significant artist with a body of work that has had an impact on the region. Akiko Kotani has had more than 230 exhibits, 30 of which are one-person exhibits, in regional, national, and international venues, including the Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir, Turkey; Kyoto Municipal Museum, Japan; the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Her work is held in private and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
As an arts educator Kotani was on the faculty of Slippery Rock University for more than 20 years. In 1984, the Pittsburgh International Airport commissioned her to create a 41-foot, site-specific tapestry. Much of her work combines painting, drawing and fiber. The diversity of her influences and her training – which includes two years working with a Mayan Indian weaver in Guatemala – come together with her imagination to create original, distinct works of art. She received her BFA from the University of Hawaii, and her MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.
For the 2013 Artist of the Year exhibition Kotani will present a diverse range of her current work. On view are two large-scale installations and numerous other 2D and 3D pieces made from plastic, silk, and glass. Her work is renowned for capturing the essence of form and the illusion of space.
